Turkey, officially Türkiye, is both European and Asian geographically. Most of its territory is in Anatolia in Asia, while Eastern Thrace is in Europe. Istanbul spans the two continents. However, Türkiye is not an EU or Schengen member, and Turkish citizenship does not automatically provide EU residence, work or visa-free travel rights. Geography and immigration status answer different questions.
Is Turkey a European or Asian Country by Geography?
Türkiye is a transcontinental country: approximately 97% of its land is in Asia and 3% in Europe. The Bosphorus, Sea of Marmara and Dardanelles form the conventional boundary between its two parts. European Türkiye borders Greece and Bulgaria. In Asia, it borders Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan through Nakhchivan, Iran, Iraq and Syria. Its position connects southeastern Europe with western Asia, but crossing an international border still requires the applicable travel documents.
Istanbul: A City on Two Continents
Beyoğlu, Şişli and Beşiktaş are on Istanbul’s European side; Kadıköy, Üsküdar and Ataşehir are on its Asian side. Bridges, the Marmaray rail tunnel, the Eurasia road tunnel and ferries connect the shores. Commuting between them does not involve an international border. Buyers should compare transport, building condition, local services and legal status rather than treating one continent as inherently a better investment. Earthquake resilience requires a competent technical assessment.
Anatolia and Eastern Thrace
Anatolia includes Ankara, Türkiye’s capital, as well as İzmir and Antalya. Eastern Thrace includes Edirne, Tekirdağ and European Istanbul. Both regions are governed by Turkish law. Buying on the European side does not turn a Turkish property into an EU property or create EU immigration rights. Coastal, metropolitan and inland locations can differ substantially in climate, costs and access to services.
Turkey’s Political Ties to Europe
Türkiye participates in the Council of Europe and has been a NATO member since 1952. The Council of Europe records its accession on 13 April 1950. Neither organization is the European Union. Türkiye’s EU candidacy and customs union are distinct arrangements; trade cooperation does not amount to EU citizenship or general freedom of movement for people.
Is Turkey in the European Union?
No. The European Council granted Türkiye candidate status in 1999, and accession negotiations opened in 2005. The Council describes negotiations as being at a standstill since June 2018. Türkiye is also outside Schengen. Turkish nationality therefore does not itself confer the right to live or work in an EU state. A person may have separate rights through another citizenship, residence status or applicable family rules.
Is Turkey Part of the Middle East?
“Middle East” is a regional term whose boundaries vary by context, rather than a citizenship or visa category. Türkiye’s borders with Syria, Iraq and Iran and its historical and commercial links explain its inclusion in many regional discussions. Istanbul is an international transport hub, but flight connections and regional labels do not determine admission to another country.
What This Means for Your Passport and Visa Access
A Turkish passport is issued by a country spanning two continents; it is not an EU passport. Ordinary Turkish passport holders generally need the appropriate authorization or visa for the Schengen area, the UK and the US unless an individual exemption applies. Some other destinations offer visa-free, visa-on-arrival or electronic authorization arrangements, each with conditions. These categories should not be combined into a promise of unrestricted travel.
Turkish Passport Travel Access
Check the destination’s official rules for your passport type, travel purpose, length of stay and transit route before booking. A standard burgundy passport does not automatically carry the privileges of special, service or diplomatic passports. A multiple-entry visa is not guaranteed merely because someone travels frequently. Passport-index ranks and destination totals change and do not explain rights to work, settle or bring family members; this guide does not rely on an unverified ranking.
The E-2 Treaty Advantage
Turkish nationality can satisfy the treaty-nationality element of an E-2 investor application, but it does not itself grant a US visa. The applicant must also satisfy the applicable business-investment and other immigration requirements. For people who obtained treaty nationality through financial investment, US law includes a three-continuous-year domicile requirement, subject to the relevant statutory scope and exceptions. Domicile is a legal question, not simply owning a Turkish address or waiting after passport issuance. Obtain US immigration advice before making an investment around an E-2 plan.
Living and Investing on Two Continents
Choose a location based on your budget, family needs, transport and intended activities. Costs depend on exchange rates, housing, insurance and lifestyle; no universal comparison with Europe or Asia can establish affordability. Permission to visit is different from permission to reside or work. The official investment guide describes a citizenship route involving eligible property from USD 400,000 with a three-year resale restriction, subject to the other requirements and an official decision. Property ownership alone does not guarantee residence or citizenship.
Residence Permits for Foreigners
The appropriate permit depends on the purpose of stay. Property ownership and tourism may be grounds for short-term residence, while family residence is a separate category with its own conditions. A property used for a property-based application must qualify as a dwelling and be used for that purpose. Do not rely on a blanket USD 200,000/100,000 split between provinces: confirm the applicable acquisition-date, value, address and eligibility requirements with the authority before buying. Applications use the official e-İkamet process, with supporting documents and any required appointment. Duration, renewal and long-term residence eligibility are conditional; they are not automatic after purchasing a home or spending a stated number of years in Türkiye.
Choosing a City
Istanbul may suit international business and metropolitan life; Antalya, Bodrum and Fethiye offer coastal settings. İzmir and Ankara offer different transport, education and employment environments. Visit shortlisted areas, ideally in different seasons, and assess actual housing, school and healthcare options. A legal assessment cannot replace personal research or a building inspection.
Buying Property Safely
Check eligibility for foreign ownership and any location or nationality restrictions. Review title ownership, mortgages, liens, annotations, zoning and occupancy permits before committing funds. Ask qualified specialists to assess the building’s condition and earthquake resilience. A valuation estimates value; it does not guarantee against overpayment, structural defects or future loss. Confirm separately whether a transaction qualifies for the intended residence or citizenship route.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Turkey in Europe or Asia?
Both. Approximately 97% of its land lies in Asian Anatolia and 3% in European Eastern Thrace.
Is Turkey part of the European Union?
No. It is an EU candidate country, not an EU or Schengen member.
Is Istanbul in Europe or Asia?
Both. The Bosphorus separates the city’s European and Asian shores, which remain within Türkiye.
Does a Turkish passport give visa-free access to Europe?
There is no single visa rule for all Europe. An ordinary Turkish passport does not itself provide Schengen visa-free access; destination-specific exemptions and individual statuses must be checked.
How strong is the Turkish passport?
Its usefulness depends on your destinations, passport type and individual rights. Check official entry conditions rather than relying on a changing ranking or destination total.
Can US citizens visit Turkey without a visa?
Türkiye’s Foreign Ministry lists US ordinary passport holders as visa-exempt for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Official passports have different rules; work, study and longer stays require separate assessment.
